Objectives
The Student will:
examine maps, books, a sketch made by Columbus which offer a variety perspectives of what inspired Christopher Columbus to formulate and execute his voyage to the western hemisphere. Group discussion will occur which will generate an empathetic approach to Columbus' motivations.
compare and contrast different drawings and movie clips which depict what the first meeting was like between the Native Americans and Columbus.
analyze a political cartoon from the perspective of the Native Americans. Discussion will occur regarding an empathetic viewpoint of each group involved in the panel of the political cartoon.
consult previous research, formulate and determine their own viewpoint of what the first meeting was like between Columbus and Native Americans.
design a nine panel cartoon depicting their interpretation of the first encounter between Columbus and the inhabitants of "la Hispaniola".
present and explain to the class their version (a nine panel cartoon) of the first meeting between Columbus and indigenous people.
complete a formal unit assessment test that will be utilized outside the scope of this lesson module.
